IT IS ELEPHANT DAY

I have been obsessed with elephants for more than a decade. I have a tiny apartment, within which there are at least 25 elephant statues, figurines, photos, stuffed animals, and jewelry.

I grew up spoiled with Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo in my backyard, so I have seen them there plenty of times.

BUT TODAY I GET TO SEE THEM FOR REAL.

I recently gave out this blog address to a bunch of new people, so in hopes that some of them actually come check out the blog, here is a summary of what is going on without needing go back through the last 20 posts... I started applying for the Peace Corps 2.5 years ago, and finally received an invitation to serve in Honduras last fall. After increased violence in the country, they cancelled the Honduras program and we all had to get reassigned. I was given the option of Mali or Panama, and after a really rough 36 hours, I picked Panama. I was then placed on Medical Hold for a few months while I got all the correct vaccines needed, and I finally got the email about staging and booked my plane ticket for DC on April 2nd. I am leaving for Panama (via staging in DC) in 8 days, and will be working in rural communities rehabilitating water systems and teaching about water related health issues until July 2014. The longest 'DAY' of my life...

I did it. As of today, I am now one day closer to my actual leaving than I have ever been before. On December 16th,2011, when my Honduras invitation was cancelled, I was 66 days from departure. Today, on February 25th, I am 65 days from departure. That was the longest 'day' of my life. It was constantly frustrating, like re-writing that thesis paper after your computer crashed. Knowing you had already accomplished this, and that yes, it should be easier this time because of that, but also knowing that there are other things you could have been doing if this hadn't have happened. But it's over. I'm back 'on track'. I can count the number of weeks left in this country without needing to use my toes. I'm hopeful, and even letting myself get excited again. Earning Stripes

They say every experience as a Volunteer teaches you something, and I feel like in the last week I have learned a lot about myself and Panama. A week ago Thursday, I got hit with a chest cold like a brick. Sunday, my eye was so gooey I couldn't open it, and had to make a trip back to the city for pink eye antibiotics. Back in site Tuesday, I did nothing but sleep and use the latrine until I 'cried uncle' on Thursday and came back to the city AGAIN. This time a bacterial infection in my digestive system. Hey, when I get sick, I don't mess around. Don't worry, I am currently on the mend and feeling like a human for the first time in about 10 days and am excited to see Panama from the other side. Cuz when you're sick, this country can suck. But then again, what country doesn't when you're sick? Regardless, I learned stuff. And that's important.
